Life and Death

Like most turtles in the province, Stinkpot Turtles prefer to spend most of their time in the water.  Unlike most turtles however, this smallest of Ontario's Turtle even does its basking under the water.  Because of their secluded nature, there are no accurate counts available.

The Stinkpot's diet consists primarily of carrion, aquatic insects, mollusk and crustaceans.

That's Amazing

  • Smallest of Ontario's eight turtle species.
  • The common name 'stinkpot' refers to the turtles use of noxious-smelling liquids it secretes when it feels threatened.
