Life and Death

The red-tailed hawk will feed mostly on small mammals such as mice, voles, shrews, squirrels, groundhogs and rabbits. Also feeding on birds such as ducks, grouse, quail, pigeons, domestic chickens and ducks; with fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates making up the smallest percentage of the diet.

These birds occupy a great variety of habitats from sub-artic coniferous forests to arid deserts and from wooded city parks to rural farmland; their favorite being open fields and grasslands where prey is easily spotted. They nest in deciduous trees, where they make large nests of twigs, bark and leaves.

The red-tailed hawk lays 2-4 eggs which will hatch after 28-35 days. The young are reared by both parents and can fly 45 days after hatching.

This large hawk has only a few predators with possibilities such as, the great horned owl, during the night when it is sleeping.

That's Amazing

  • The red-tailed hawks eyesight is 8 times more powerful than in humans.
  • The characteristic red tail does not appear on immature birds.
  • This hawk is responsible for the loud, descending scream (keeer-r-r) that is heard in the background of any movie or TV show that takes place in the desert.
